excerpt from the excellent documentary, “precious knowledge” (2011), a film covering the movement at a high school in Tucson, Arizona to defend and advance their ethnic studies program, which was under threat by the school board who disapproved of its “radical and anti-white sentiments”. (despite never setting foot inside the classroom). This conversation was recorded at an educators meeting. An older white male teacher at the school opens with complaints about the apathy of young people. The educator responding is Jeff Duncan-Andrade, a longtime activist/community organizer/teacher in East Oakland. This conversation takes place at the beginning of the film and his words set the tone for the rest.
